Short answer
“Reiki psychic surgery” is not a substitute for medical surgery, diagnosis or treatment. Practitioners may describe symbolic removal of “energy blocks”, but that does not demonstrate removal of diseased tissue or a medical benefit. Do not pay for promises of a cure or let the practice delay an appointment, investigation or treatment.
The name can confuse a spiritual ritual with a medical procedure. The full guide explains the claims and the precautions to take if someone offers it during illness:

Reiki Psychic Surgery: What It Claims and Why It Is Not Reiki
Three things worth knowing now
- Reiki is usually described as light touch or hands held above the body, not surgery. A claim to locate a disease or remove something near your organs requires medical evidence; a spiritual impression is not a diagnosis.
- A 1990 American Cancer Society review of psychic surgery found no evidence of objective medical benefit and urged ill people not to seek it as treatment. That historical review is not a clinical test of every later Reiki-labelled ritual.
- Some people find quiet, optional Reiki sessions comforting, but comfort is not evidence that a disease has been treated. Reiki and your health explains how to consider it alongside necessary care.
NCCIH’s Reiki overview notes inconsistent, often low-quality research and no scientific evidence for the proposed energy field. Neither Reiki training nor the word “surgery” establishes an ability to diagnose or remove disease.
If you are seriously ill and considering any alternative practice, talk to your care team first. If a practitioner has pressured you with urgency or told you nothing else will work, the Reiki safety guide explains how to respond and where to report it.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is Reiki psychic surgery the same as medical surgery?
No. A symbolic energy ritual is not a medical operation and does not demonstrate removal of diseased tissue. Do not use it instead of diagnosis, surgery or other necessary treatment.
2. Can a practitioner diagnose an illness by sensing an energy block?
An impression about energy is not a reliable medical diagnosis. Discuss symptoms and concerns with a qualified healthcare professional rather than treating the impression as proof of disease.
3. What if someone promises that psychic surgery will cure me?
Do not pay for a promised cure or delay care. Discuss the offer with your care team and seek help if you are being pressured to stop treatment or make an urgent payment.
4. Can I choose ordinary Reiki for comfort during illness?
You may choose an optional session if you want it, with consent, clear limits and any necessary care-team advice. Feeling comfort does not prove disease treatment, and Reiki should not replace medical care.
